Nichols Going Hungry?

Denver, CO – Okla. bombing conspirator on a hunger strike

DENVER (AP) Oklahoma City bombing conspirator Terry Nichols says he's going on a hunger strike because he claims prison officials don't provide him a fiber-rich diet.

Nichols said in a handwritten note filed in Denver federal court Thursday that he began his strike Monday because his body is being "defiled" by the food he gets at the federal Supermax prison in Florence, Colo.

Budget Hole

Oklahoma City, OK – Lawmakers pass budget bills for FY2010 fix

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) State lawmakers are using money from federal stimulus funds and a state savings account to plug a hole in this year's budget, prevent trooper furloughs and ease cuts for education, health care and prisons.

Although no formal agreement has been announced, special budget committees in the House and Senate on Thursday approved several funding bills to patch the budget for the fiscal year that ends June 30.

School Bus Wreck

Muskogee, OK – MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) Muskogee school officials say three elementary school students were hospitalized after a car hit the school bus they were riding. District Transportation Director Anne Henry says none of the injuries are serious. Police say the driver of the car ran a stop light and hit the bus yesterday morning.

Chamber Priorities

Tulsa, OK – The Tulsa Metro Chamber of Commerce and 34 regional partners announced the current status of the top initiatives it is collectively championing at the state capitol.

1)-Gilcrease Expressway
2)-OSU Medical Center Funding
3)-A study on municipal finances
4)-Race to the Top Education funding
5)-Oklahoma Workers' Compensation Reform
6)-Institution of a provider fee that would help maximize federal matching funds.

The list was announced in a news conference at the Summit Club in downtown Tulsa.

Gatorade Plant Closing at Pryor

Pryor, OK – 100 people will soon be out of work at Pryor's Gatorade plant. The facility opened less than three years ago. A news release from the company says the decision to close the plant was not easy, but was necessary considering the overall market conditions.

Manufacturing work has already ceased at the plant The facility will be mothballed in about three months. Gatorade is owned by PepsiCo. The plant cost $180-million and was PepsiCo's largest Gatorade facility.

Poultry Lawsuit Wrapping Up

Tulsa, OK – TULSA, Okla. (AP) After four months, closing arguments in the state of Oklahoma's federal pollution lawsuit against the Arkansas poultry industry are beginning.

The arguments were scheduled last Thursday but delayed a week after U.S. District Judge Gregory Frizzell became ill. Frizzell has presided over the 51-days of hearings during the past four months.

Tulsa, OK – A sealed corridor of five railroad crossings downtown has been completed. This sealed corridor consists of new gates installed where the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad intersects with Greenwood Avenue, Elgin Avenue, Cheyenne Avenue, Elwood Avenue and Guthrie Avenue.
