LONE WOLF, Okla. (AP) — Ongoing drought that has lowered the water level at Lake Altus-Lugert in southwestern Oklahoma has reduced the number of vacationers to the lake — but officials at Quartz Mountain State Park say the water and fish in the lake remain safe.
Park director Terry Mosley tells The Lawton-Constitution that the conditions have cut into park and lodge revenue — but visitors are still coming to the lake to fish and for recreation.
The lake is about 20 feet below normal and golden algae has led to a fish kill. Mosley says the lake is being restocked with fish and that they are safe to eat.
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor report shows the region remains in severe to extreme drought — although conditions are improving due to recent rain.
