Cashion, OK – US Marine from Cashion killed in Afghanistan

CASHION, Okla. (AP) A U.S. Marine from Cashion has been killed in Afghanistan.

Family friends confirmed Friday that 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Jonathan Stroud died after being wounded Thursday during a firefight while his unit was on foot patrol Afghanistan.

Debra Boyd, whose son Sam graduated with Stroud in 2007 from Cashion High School, says she learned of Stroud's death Thursday from his mother.

Boyd says Stroud and his wife married last year and were expecting the couple's first child.

The Department of Defense has not yet confirmed Stroud's death, but a Marine spokesman at Camp Lejeune, N.C., confirmed that Stroud was assigned to the Combat Engineer Platoon, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment. The regiment is part of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade deployed to the Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan.
