Vote Expected Soon on Indian Statue

Shan Gray

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. (AP) — City leaders in Sand Springs could soon vote on plans to build a 21-story monument known as "The American."

The statue would depict an American Indian with a bald eagle landing on his forearm.

Backers of the plan say the statue could draw as many as 2.2 million visitors annually.

The first plans for the monument were announced in the early 2000's and was to have been built on Holmes Peak near the Gilcrease Museum.
