Oklahoma City, OK – Oklahoma's jobless rate climbs to 7 percent

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Oklahoma's unemployment rate rose by one-tenth of a percentage point to 7 percent in August.

The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission said Tuesday that 122,480 people were out of work last month, up from 121,610 who were unemployed in July. Oklahoma's unemployment rate in August 2009 was 6.9 percent.

Statistics from the commission show that from August 2009 to August 2010, the government sector shed 6,400 jobs and 1,500 jobs were lost from the manufacturing segment.

During that 12-month period, 9,400 jobs were added in the professional and business services sector and there were 6,300 more jobs in the construction segment.

Nationally, the unemployment rate is 9.6 percent.
