Tulsa Ballet Concludes Its Season with "Off the Floor: Creations in Studio K"

Aired Wednesday, April 25th.
Aired Wednesday, April 25th.

Today, we welcome back to our program Marcello Angelini, who's been the artistic director at Tulsa Ballet since 1995. As a critic writing for Dance Insider once noted: "To look at what Marcello Angelini has accomplished [since he arrived at] Tulsa Ballet is to see what a community-based arts revolution looks like." The glorious revolution continues with a new production --- the final show of the 2011-2012 season --- called "Off the Floor: Creations in Studio K," which will soon be staged at Tulsa Ballet's Studio K facility in Brookside (at 1212 East 45th Place South). "Off the Floor" will be staged from April 27th through May 6th --- please see tulsaballet.org for exact dates, show times, and other details --- and, as Angelini explains on this edition of ST, the show actually consists of three very different yet equally exciting works by three distinct, highly accomplished young choreographers: Ma Cong, Douglas Lee, and Darrell Grand Moultrie. All three ballets are herein receiving their world premieres. Tulsa's own Cong will present "Memorias del Viento" (or "Memories of the Wind"); Lee, a former principal dancer with Stuttgart Ballet, will offer "Septet: A Ballet for Seven Dancers on a Theme of Submission;" and Moultrie, a critically acclaimed choreographer who's danced on Broadway (in the original cast of "Billy Elliot") and in various TV programs, will unveil a piece called "Box the Outside." Also, as Angelini adds --- at the end of our interview, speaking with justifiable pride and pleasure --- for the first time ever, Tulsa Ballet audiences will be able to watch performances by various other Tulsa-area dance companies 30 minutes prior to the Studio K shows that are scheduled for May 3rd through the 6th. Rich Fisher passed through KWGS about thirty years ago, and just never left. Today, he is the general manager of Public Radio Tulsa, and the host of KWGS’s public affairs program, StudioTulsa, which celebrated its twentieth anniversary in August 2012 . As host of StudioTulsa, Rich has conducted roughly four thousand long-form interviews with local, national, and international figures in the arts, humanities, sciences, and government. Very few interviews have gone smoothly. Despite this, he has been honored for his work by several organizations including the Governor's Arts Award for Media by the State Arts Council, a Harwelden Award from the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa, and was named one of the “99 Great Things About Oklahoma” in 2000 by Oklahoma Today magazine.
