Tulsa, OK – TU students, faculty and staff distributed 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to Kendall-Whittier Elementary School students during a morning assembly.
Members of TU's athletic teams were instrumental in stuffing the backpacks earlier this month, and TU student-athletes were on hand for the distribution event Tuesday morning.
TU President Steadman Upham addressed the students to encourage them in their educational pursuits.
The backpack distribution was conceived and organized by TU employees and students as part of a university initiative to give back to the Kendall-Whittier neighborhood, which is adjacent to the TU campus.
Earlier this summer, TU helped sponsor a number of children from Kendall-Whittier to attend Tulsa Park and Recreation camps at nearby Turner Park. TU also provided transportation to and from the camp using TU shuttle buses.
A number of other outreach activities are planned during the coming months to engage the university with the Kendall-Whittier neighborhood.
