Teachers Sue District

Norman, OK – Teachers suing Norman school district

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) The Norman school district is being sued by nine teachers over the withholding of $355.12 in taxes from a $5,000 bonus they received.

The state provides the bonus to National Board certified teachers. The money is sent to the districts to pay the teachers.

The state has in the past included funding to pay the tax but this year did not. The district withheld the tax from the bonus.

State Department of Education spokeswoman Shelly Hickman told The Norman Transcript that this year's bonus was provided at a time of budget cuts because of a funding shortfall.

Norman schools chief financial officer Brenda Burkett says the school is just the paying agent and is not responsible for the bonus. Attorney Richard Wilkinson for the teachers declined comment.
