Oklahoma City, OK – Governor signs budget bills

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Gov. Brad Henry has signed legislation to fill holes in the 2010 fiscal year budget that were caused by a slow economy and sagging energy prices.

Henry signed the legislation on Friday, two days after Republicans and Democrats in the Senate reached an agreement on the appropriations and funding transfers needed to address the revenue crunch.

The budget agreement will reduce cuts to education, health care and public safety and prevent the furlough of Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers.

Although this year's budget crisis has been resolved, Henry says legislative budget writers still face challenges for the budget year that begins July 1.

The governor says officials will have to make some very difficult and possibly unpopular decisions in order to protect vital services.
