State Senator to Run for Demo Post

State of Oklahoma-File Photo

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A state senator from Oklahoma City has announced her candidacy for chairwoman of the Oklahoma Democratic Party.

Sen. Connie Johnson said Friday she will seek the post during the party's annual convention on Saturday, May 18. Democratic campaign strategist Jed Green will seek the vice-chair position.

Current Democratic Party Chairman Wallace Collins also is seeking re-election to the post, along with current vice-chair Dana Orwig. Collins is a former Democratic state legislator from Norman.

Johnson was first elected in 2004 and before that worked for more than two decades on the Senate staff. She represents a heavily Democratic district in northeast Oklahoma City and won her last election in 2010 with nearly 70 percent of the vote in a four-way Democratic primary. No Republican ran for the seat.
