CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina sheriff says he has sent two deputies and a state agent to Oklahoma as the dispute over the adoption of a 3-year-old Cherokee girl continues.
Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon told The Post and Courier of Charleston, South Carolina he sent the officers Thursday morning because he thought they could assist authorities in Oklahoma.
Matt and Melanie Capobianco, the couple trying to adopt 3-year-old Veronica, are from Charleston and a South Carolina court has awarded them custody of the child. But Veronica's birth father, Dusten Brown, is a member of the Cherokee Nation and is fighting the decision under the Indian Child Welfare Act.
Cannon says there have been no major developments in the case and would not say if any new court hearings have been scheduled.
