Sapulpa, OK – Part of Route 66 dedicated to Okla. cop, father
SAPULPA, Okla. (AP) A portion of State Highway 66 in Sapulpa has been dedicated in honor of a police officer who died with his father while responding to a call.
The ceremony marking a section of the road as the Officer Larry W. Cantrell and Mr. Charles L. Cantrell Memorial Highway was held Sunday. The 34-year-old officer was responding to a backup call from another officer on July 30, 2005, when he died in an accident. His 59-year-old was riding with him.
Larry Cantrell was the first Sapulpa officer killed in the line of duty since the 1930s.
Fred Clark, the president of Sapulpa's Fraternal Order of Police chapter, asked state Sen. Brian Bingham if a portion of the highway could be dedicated to honor the Cantrells, and state Rep. Mark McCullough later became involved with the effort.
