Tulsa, OK – Okla. Senate Democratic leader plans to resign

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The Democratic leader of the state Senate and a one-time candidate for U.S. Senate is resigning from office and plans to move out of state.

Sen. Andrew Rice announced Tuesday that he will resign his duties effective Jan. 15. His term ends in 2014, which means Gov. Mary Fallin would have to call for a special election for the central Oklahoma City seat within 30 days of his resignation.

He said in a statement that his wife, who is a physician, is pursuing a career opportunity in another state and that he plans to support her. The couple has two young sons.

The Senate Democratic Caucus is expected to meet in the next few months to select a new leader.
