A Remarkable New Monthly Publication Launches in Tulsa: "This Land"

By Rich Fisher

Tulsa, Oklahoma – On this edition of our show, we're speaking with the Tulsa-based writer and editor Michael Mason, whose new monthly publication, "This Land," has just put out its third issue. (You can, and definitely should, visit the online version of "This Land" at thislandpress.com.) Dedicated to "relevant readings regarding Oklahoma" --- and exclusively employing "local words" as well as "local art" --- Mason's publication is mainly concerned with telling stories: features appearing in the pages of "This Land" tend to be quality works of extended, in-depth journalism or personal non-fiction. As the editor-in-chief of "This Land," Mason says he's more interested in publishing compelling narratives than, say, running reviews or previews or coverage of events. And true to the journal's Woody Guthrie-inspired title, there's an emphasis throughout the prose, artwork, and photography of "This Land" on the lives of ordinary people. It's an exciting and very interesting new publication --- especially if you're at all a fan of good writing and/or worthwhile journalism --- and as Mason astutely adds: "Just in the way that food has gone local, I think good writing is going local as well."
