Tulsa, OK – Small district to cut school days
PRUE, Okla. (AP) A small northeast Oklahoma school district will hold classes four days a week as a way to save money.
Prue Superintendent Tom Scully said Wednesday there will be fewer days but hours on those days will change from an 8:20 a.m. to 3 p.m. schedule to 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. in August.
Scully, who took over his position this month, says the previous administration came up with the idea and the school board recently approved the plan.
He says the district could save about 20 percent on transportation and utility costs. The annual budget for district of about 318 students is around $2 million.
A new law allows districts to change the school year into hours, for a minimum of 1,050 hours of education a year.
Scully says the district will exceed the minimum under the new schedule.
