Bartlesville, OK – Okla health department cites jail for overcrowding

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. (AP) The Oklahoma State Health Department sent a violation notice to Washington County commissioners about overcrowding and other issues at the county jail, but officials say the problems have been corrected.

Commissioner Linda Herndon told the Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise that a report regarding the notice was sent back to the department last week.

Undersheriff Steve Johnson says the issues was mainly overcrowding. Johnson says Health Department officials recognize that the county is presently building a new jail to relieve crowded conditions.

In 2008, the state Department of Health issued a compliance order to the county that could have resulted in fines of $500 per day, per prisoner over capacity.

Right now, the jail's capacity is 78. Other inmates are being housed in the Bartlesville City Jail and the Nowata County Jail.
