Police Lay-offs

By Associated Press

Tulsa, OK – TULSA, Okla. (AP) Tulsa city officials are to meet with 21 police officers who face a possible layoff.

The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at police headquarters in downtown Tulsa.

Mayor Kathy Taylor is looking for ways to cut about $6 million from the city budget because of falling sales tax revenue during the economic downturn.

Taylor says she's hoping to keep 18 of the officers by using money from a federal stimulus grant that was originally meant to hire new officers. And she says she hopes to keep the other officers by negotiating cost savings with the police union.

Taylor also confirms that the 20-member police academy scheduled for March is being canceled.
