Pine and Peoria Welcomes Updated Bus Shelter

KWGS News

A newly renovated bus shelter at Pine and Peoria is just one step in a series of improvements Tulsa Transit hopes to make to its system.

Tulsa Transit General Manager Bill Cartwright says one goal is to improve on-street facilities.

“We have something around 1,500 bus stops around town, and we have a little over 200 bus shelters,” he said. “So we’ve got a long way to go.”

He says the new shelter, as well as goals for other new shelters, fits in with a plan to expand the bus system’s coverage and frequency.

“Along with that, you always want to have the on-street assets,” he said, “and some technologies that we’re working on—new website, trip planner, GPS bus tracker.”

The GPS bus tracker, he said, is in the testing stages. It will allow riders to check where their buses are from their smart phones, hopefully reducing unnecessary waiting times.

Cartwright says the goal is to make the system easier to learn and use.

The City of Tulsa held a ribbon cutting for the new shelter Tuesday.
