Oklahoma City, OK – Proposal places Legislature under open meeting law
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A proposed bill by state Rep. Jason Murphey would require state lawmakers to comply with Oklahoma's Open Records and Open Meetings laws.
The Legislature has exempted itself from both acts.
Murphey told The Oklahoman the proposal is being reviewed by a staff attorney and should be filed in a matter of days. The deadline to file bills is Jan. 20.
He said legislators should follow the same laws as all other elected officials. The proposal includes posting the House and Senate agendas at least 24 hours in advance and making any meeting attended by a majority of the members open to the public.
He said correspondence between a legislator and constituents would remain private.
House Speaker-elect Kris Steele said he hasn't seen the proposal but supports openness in government.
