Oklahoma Probation Officer Killed in Shooting

MIDWEST CITY, Okla. (AP) — The Oklahoma Department of Corrections says a man who was killed in a shooting in Midwest City was a probation and parole officer.

Police were responding to a disturbance call about noon Friday when they found a body in the street. Corrections spokeswoman Joyce Jackson later told reporters the victim was 32-year-old Jeff McCoy, who had worked as a probation officer for almost seven years.

Midwest City police say McCoy had gone to the neighborhood to speak to a parolee. As officers tried to get to his body, someone fired shots at them from a house.

Eventually they arrested Lester Kinchion, who hasn't been formally charged.

Jackson says probation officers are trained, and what happened to McCoy is rare. She says it's the first time she knows of that a probation officer has been killed.
