Oklahoma Late Fees

Oklahoma City, OK – Tax Commission collects $9.5M in late car tag fees

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) The Oklahoma Tax Commission has collected about $9.5 million in late car registration fees and excise taxes during the last six months.

The law mandating increases in the penalties for late renewal of state license tags took effect on July 1. Commission officials say that under the previous rules, they might have collected in a full year about one-fourth of what they've already taken in during the last six months.

The law increased the late fee for tags from 25 cents a day to $1 a day. The penalty cap now is $100, up from $25.

Tax Commission spokeswoman Michelle Thompson says that because many people aren't aware of the new law, they are having to pay the maximum penalty plus the cost of their tags.
