Oklahoma Highway Officials urge Work Zone Caution

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is urging motorists to be alert and cautious in road and bridge construction zones.

State highway officials are observing Work Zone Awareness Week by reminding motorists that the men and women who work on the state's highways are mere feet away from high-speed traffic with often only a cone or barrel that mark construction zones separating them.

Last year, 13 people were killed in work zone collisions in the state, including two Transportation Department workers. Another 789 people were injured in 1,427 collisions in Oklahoma work zones last year, the second highest number of work zone collisions and the greatest amount of injuries in the past decade.

Nationally, four out of five people who are killed in work zones are motorists and passengers in vehicles.
