Oklahoma Fighting Federal Report on Daycares

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — The state's chief social services agency is disputing a federal report to be released Tuesday that says Oklahoma doesn't require day care providers to conduct background checks on janitors.

Mark Beutler is communications manager for the Department of Human Services. He says staff was reaching out Monday to federal investigators to have the report corrected. He couldn't say where or how the breakdown between the agencies took place.

The 37-page report from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General states that Oklahoma was among 18 states that didn't require a check on janitorial staff at the centers.

But Beutler says Oklahoma law mandates that all day care employees, including janitorial staff, are required to have a background check.
