Oklahoma Co. Jail Employees to Receive Annual Training

KWGS News

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma County jail employees will receive more training because of last February's suicide of an inmate.

The Oklahoman reports (http://is.gd/xkfRqZ ) the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Department will enhance training on how employees check on inmates after the death of 39-year-old Jeffrey Darling.

Inspectors with the state Health Department found that an employee checked on Darling but did not require the inmate to remove paper that was covering the window of his cell. Darling used a bed sheet to hang himself from a light fixture in his cell.

The sheriff's department says employees will receive annual training that emphasizes proper sight checks — meaning an employee must visually check on an inmate, not just rely on a verbal check.

Previously the department only offered the training when an employee was hired.
