Eufaula, OK – Eufaula officer resigns before council hearing

EUFAULA, Okla. (AP) A veteran Eufaula police officer has resigned, one day before the city council was set to hold a termination hearing for him.

The Muskogee Phoenix reports that 39-year-old Sgt. Detective Wesley Dawson submitted his resignation letter to Police Chief Don Murray on Wednesday. The council's special meeting set for Thursday was canceled.

Dawson had worked for the Eufaula police for 18 years. He had been on administrative leave with pay since Aug. 13.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation conducted an investigation of Dawson's case and a Oct. 15 disciplinary letter from Mayor Dean Smith had recommended Dawson be fired. Dawson initially appealed his firing.
