Tulsa, Oklahoma – On today's show, we're discussing a great new video-art exhibit on view at the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, "Adaptation," which will run through January 9, 2011. It's a traveling exhibit that originated at the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago, and our guest on StudioTulsa is Stephanie Smith, Director of Collections and Exhibitions and Curator of Contemporary Art at the Smart Museum. As Smith tells us, the process of adaptation has forever been a facet of the creative process --- all manner of artists, in other words, have always confronted issues like influence, inspiration, and imitation --- and this particular exhibition considers the use of adaptation in the work of some noted video artists. In "Adaptation," we find video installations by Guy Ben-Ner, Arturo Herrera, Catherine Sullivan, and Eve Sussman & The Rufus Corporation that transform original material to make new artworks by re-envisioning literature, film, ballet, painting, and even "spam" e-mail.
