Norman Police Dept. Installs Lifesaving Equipment

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — The Norman Police Department is installing trauma kits in all its squad cars.

The kits contain first-aid supplies as well as tourniquets and trauma bandages, tools that are used primarily to stop or control bleeding.

In 2008, the Norman SWAT team began issuing life-saving tools to all its members, and the tactical medics of the Norman SWAT team have trained and equipped officers with the lifesaving tools.

The department began training and deployment of the equipment in January. And officers have already used them to save lives. In one incident, an officer used the equipment on a shooting victim. In another, they were used on a person who had attempted suicide by cutting. Both victims survived.

The department plans to deploy more than 100 trauma kits.
