Oklahoma City, OK – Dem supt candidate won't take stand on SQ 744

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) One of the candidates seeking to become Oklahoma's next state superintendent is declining to take a public stand on State Question 744.

The proposed constitutional amendment would require the state within three years to meet the regional average of per-student spending in the six states bordering Oklahoma. Gov. Brad Henry says it may be the most important state question considered by voters in 20 years.

Democratic state Sen. Susan Paddack so far has declined to let voters know her stand on the proposal. She says she believes in the right of the people to vote on the proposal and that she trusts voters to make the right decision.

Republican nominee Janet Barresi opposes State Question 744 while independent Richard Cooper supports it. They spoke Friday during a closed forum at the National Weather Center in Norman.
