Oklahoma City, OK – State panel rejects clemency bid for killer

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A state panel has denied clemency for a death-row inmate from Tulsa convicted and sentenced to die for the 1993 beating deaths of a woman and her 6-year-old son.

The Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board voted 4-1 Tuesday against clemency for 60-year-old Julius Ricardo Young, despite his claim that he was innocent.

Young's mother also delivered an emotional plea to the board to spare her son's life.

Young is scheduled to be executed Jan. 14 for the 1993 slayings of 20-year-old Joyland Morgan and her 6-year-old son, Kewan, whose beaten and bloody bodies were found in their Tulsa apartment.

State prosecutors say the circumstantial evidence against Young was overwhelming, and the death penalty handed down by a Tulsa County jury has been upheld by various appellate courts.
