Two jazz-piano masters passed away earlier this week; Marian McPartland (shown here) was 95, and Cedar Walton was 79. Both had remarkably lengthy and highly influential careers in the music, as players as well as composers, and we'll be hearing a few different recordings by each of these greats on the forthcoming installment of All This Jazz, on Saturday the 24th.
All This Jazz airs each and every Saturday night here on Public Radio 89.5-1, beginning at 10pm Central. We always offer a rich, wide-ranging playlist of modern jazz, both recent and classic.
And while the second half of our two-hour show invariably carries a "theme," this time around --- just for our 8/24/13 show --- we're doing things a bit differently. That is, this edition of ATJ will run for only one hour, from 10 till 11pm, so that we can bring you a specially-crafted memorial broadcast of "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz," the popular public-radio show that McPartland created and began hosting in the late 1970s --- and that was, for many years, a Saturday-night fixture on this very radio station. (McPartland was, after all, not just one of the outstanding jazz pianists of the post-WWII era, she was also --- as was noted in her New York Times obituary --- an "NPR Staple.")
So again, at 11pm Central on Saturday the 24th, please tune in for a wonderful celebration of the music and legacy of Marian McPartland --- a special, memorable airing of "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz" (hosted by her longtime friend, Murray Horwitz) that will focus on her many outstanding compositions.
