On the Next ATJ: Dave Brubeck (1920-2012)

Listen for the next edition of All This Jazz, airing on Saturday the 8th on Public Radio 89.5-1, beginning at 10pm. We'll deliver two hours of modern jazz, both recent and classic --- as always --- and we'll be playing lots of music by the late, great Dave Brubeck.

The legendary jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader died earlier this week at 91. (And btw, you can also hear, on demand, a wonderful "from the archives" interview with Dave Brubeck that aired recently on StudioTulsa on this very radio station.)

As many of us know already, Brubeck attained --- over the course of a remarkably long and successful career --- a widespread popularity in American culture that was perhaps rivaled only by the likes of Ellington or Armstrong. His greatness was (and still is) known and appreciated by legions of fans who don't even listen to jazz all that much; his influence and achievement in American music remain beyond measure; his position within the jazz pantheon is a given.

And we play his music, of course, quite often on our program!

Therefore, the second-hour theme of our next All This Jazz will be "Brubeck's Tunes" --- as rendered by his own various bands and by other jazz players as well. Join us.
