For the second-hour theme on this installment of ATJ, we'll hear two cuts apiece from four terrific jazz albums of the 1970s. Now, this was a decade, admittedly, that gave us a great deal of rather lousy jazz music, mainly due to wholesale changes in taste, style, pop culture, et cetera --- to the various jazz and pseudo-jazz practitioners who sold out to such changes.... But that's NOT, just to clarify, the sort of Seventies music we'll be spinning on our show.
Rather, we'll dig FACING YOU by Keith Jarrett (as pictured herewith; his first-ever album for the ECM label, and the in-studio, solo-piano precursor to his landmark KOLN CONCERT recording); HEAVY WEATHER by Weather Report (the chart-topping, record-setting, era-defining mega-release that re-branded and reinvigorated this band, and that remains perhaps the best album ever to come out of jazz-rock fusion); LITTLE RED'S FANTASY by Woody Shaw (which captures an excellent post-bop combo playing memorable, often beautiful tunes with fire and energy and chops galore); and BLOSSOM DEARIE SINGS by Blossom Dearie (the initial release on Dearie's own Daffodil label, with the one-of-a-kind singer/songwriter/pianist doing her one-of-a-kind thing amid some very strong rhythmic support).
