New Award Created

By Associated Press

Oklahoma City – OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) A new award for the top freshman in college basketball is being named for the late Oklahoma great Wayman Tisdale.

Organizers of the Wayman Tisdale Award say it will be presented each year to the freshman selected by the United States Basketball Writers Association.

Tisdale died in Tulsa in May 2009 of cancer. He was a three-time All-American at Oklahoma before leaving after his junior season for a 12-year NBA career. He was also a member of the United States' gold winning 1984 Olympic team.

Organizers say Tisdale's widow Regina is aware and "very receptive" of the award.
