Fort Gibson, OK – Officials find zebra mussels in Fort Gibson Lake
FORT GIBSON, Okla. (AP) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says zebra mussels have been found in another Oklahoma lake.
Corps spokesman Ross Adkins says the mussels were recently found in Fort Gibson Lake. The species was previously found in Skiatook, Texoma, Kaw, Keystone, Eufaula, Oologah and Grand lakes.
The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife says zebra mussels cost taxpayers millions of dollars by clogging power plant and public water intakes and pipes. They also damage boat engines and threaten native mussels, fish and wildlife by consuming available food.
The mussels were first found in Oklahoma in 1993 in the McClellan-Kerr navigation system.
