Met's 'Ring Cycle' Continues With "Die Walküre"

Airs Saturday at 10 am on KWTU Classical 88.7-1

The 2011-12 Metropolitan Opera Radio Broadcast season continues with a live broadcast of Wagner’s Die Walküre, the second installment in his epic cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen. Katarina Dalayman sings the title role of the warrior maiden Brünnhilde, alongside an acclaimed cast that includes Bryn Terfel as Wotan, Jonas Kaufmann as Siegmund, Eva-Maria Westbroek as Sieglinde, Stephanie Blythe as Fricka, and Hans-Peter König as Hunding. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi is on the podium for the performance, part of the second complete Ring cycle presented at the Met this season in the new production by Robert Lepage. Die Walküre will be heard live over the Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 28.

Dalayman has been celebrated for performances as Brünnhilde in complete Ring cycles at opera houses throughout Europe. At the Met, she has sung both Brünnhilde and Sieglinde in Die Walküre, as well as Brünnhilde in Götterdämmerung, and this spring she appears in her first complete cycles with the company. Terfel starred as Wotan in the Met’s new production premieres of Das Rheingold and Die Walküre last season, as well as Siegfried this season, and this spring he performs three complete Ring cycles, the first ever in his distinguished career.

Stephanie Blythe sang her first Fricka at the Met in 2007. Her Met repertory encompasses a wide variety of composers and styles. In the current broadcast season, she has been heard as Eduige in Handel’s Rodelindaand Amneris in Verdi’s Aida

The intermissions will include backstage interviews and the popular Toll Brothers-MetropolitanOpera Quiz, with special guest, tenor Jay Hunter Morris.
