Tulsa, OK – Tulsa mayor wonders why his name is on ORU letters

TULSA, Okla. (AP) Mayor Dewey Bartlett says he didn't know his name is being used on recruiting letters sent to potential Oral Roberts University students and thinks the practice should be ended.

The private university sent out the letters earlier this month on old city of Tulsa letterhead, using Bartlett's electronic signature provided by the city's communications department. ORU spokesman Jeremy Burton says the university initially requested the letter from former Mayor Kathy Taylor, who provided her electronic signature and city artwork to the school.

When Bartlett took office last December, Burton says ORU made the same request to Bartlett through the communications department, which sent ORU an updated letter and signature.

Bartlett tells the Tulsa World he doesn't think a mayor should recruit for one university the city over another.
