Muskogee, OK – Mast from USS Oklahoma set to arrive in Muskogee
MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) Plans call for a 45-foot section of the mast from the battleship USS Oklahoma to serve as a centerpiece of a building at a Muskogee park.
Rick Dennis, the director of War Memorial Park, says the bent mast section, which is on loan from the U.S. Navy, is scheduled to arrived Monday at Tinker Air Force Base and should be in Muskogee by Tuesday or Wednesday.
The USS Oklahoma was sunk during the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, killing 429 men. The ship later was raised and sold for scrap, but sank again in a storm while being towed from Hawaii to California in 1947.
The mast weighs more than 22,000 pounds. It was found during dredging operations around Pearl Harbor in 2006.
