Tulsa, Okla. – Students get their first holiday next week, and many more Americans than last year will be taking advantage. AAA reports that the number of Americans expected to travel over the Labor Day weekend is up almost 10 percent from last year.
AAA Oklahoma spokesman Danial Karnes says the number of Oklahomans traveling is expected to be up by about nine percent.
He says it is all down to the economy.
"The economy is doing some better," Karnes said. "Last year a lot of people were holding on to their pocketbooks, and we've continued to see an increase in travel numbers throughout this year, through the summer, and now on to the Labor Day Holiday."
AAA will be out in full force helping members whose cars may not be able to take the heat.
"(People) don't necessarily prepare their cars for the summer season, and they really should, checking those belts and hoses," Karnes said. "As the temperatures rise, that's when those type of rubber parts expand and have a chance for failure."
