Jim Inhofe Remembers Bellmon

file photo

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today made the following statement regarding the death of former Oklahoma Governor and U.S. Sen. Henry Bellmon:

"I am saddened to hear of Henry Bellmon's death today. Back when Bellmon first ran for office, my dad was one of his earliest supporters. When he first won the governor's race, he often credited my dad for his early support. I have always thought that my dad supported Bellmon early on because they had a similar background rooted in rural America.

As a result of that early family relationship, he was one of the first Oklahoma politicians I got to know. After he was elected, I would fly him around the state as a young pilot, and during those times, I had the opportunity to get to know him better. He was a man of honor. Even if you disagreed with some of his positions, you had to respect and love him for his strong character and because he always did what he felt was the right thing to do.

Oklahoma has lost a real leader."
