Jail Inspection Cut

By Associated Press

Oklahoma City, OK – Budget cuts lead to fewer jail inspections

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) State officials say budget cuts have meant fewer jail inspections but that there is no problem.

Law enforcement officials disagree.

Many jails are being inspected once a year instead of every three months and state Health Department Jail Inspection Division director Don Garrison says that's not ideal but he doesn't think there is a negative effect. He says some jails don't need inspections as often and inspectors know which ones those are.

But Midwest City jail manager Lily Krout says inspectors often find issues before they become expensive problems. And Pottawatomie County jail director Sid Stell says when the economy drops crime rates and jail populations tend to rise.

He says inspectors look at health and safety conditions in addition to staffing levels and training of employees.
