Oklahoma City, OK – Okla. gov. vetoes bill on school accounting codes

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Gov. Brad Henry has vetoed a bill that would have changed requirements on accounting codes used by school districts to track spending.

Henry vetoed House Bill 2575 on Monday, saying it could have the unintended consequence of reducing accountability of public school expenditures.

The bill would have required the state Department of Education to finalize its reporting codes and procedures by May 1, and then prohibited the department from changing the codes more than once a year.

Henry said such a restriction could make it difficult for state personnel to track certain expenditures.

House Speaker Chris Benge says the goal of the bill was to make school expenditures more transparent and that Henry's veto would "solidify the status quo."
