Hearing Set for Bartlesville Teen Charged in School Plot

Washington County Booking Photo

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. (AP) — A preliminary hearing is scheduled to begin for an Oklahoma teenager charged with plotting a shooting at his high school.

The hearing for 18-year-old Sammie Eaglebear Chavez is set to begin Thursday morning in Bartlesville. The Tulsa World reportsthat the hearing, which will determine whether there's enough evidence for Chavez to go to trial, is expected to last two or three days.

Chavez was arrested Dec. 14 — the same day as the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Conn. Prosecutors allege that he plotted to lure classmates into the Bartlesville High School auditorium where he planned to begin shooting.

Chavez has pleaded not guilty. His mother has said she did not believe her son seriously planned any violence.
