Langley, OK – Langley - While the public is still encouraged to enjoy weekend activities at Grand Lake, the Grand River Dam Authority continues to strongly warn against recreational activities that involve bodily contact with the Grand Lake waters. GRDA is continuing to monitor the lake's confirmed blue green algae (BGA) presence.
BGA are microscopic organisms that are naturally present in lakes and streams, usually in low numbers. However, the algae can become abundant in shallow, warm water that receives heavy sunlight. While most BGA are not toxic, toxins can be produced in some algae blooms. That is what has occurred on Grand Lake and continues to develop.
In addition to the "no body contact" warning, GRDA is also urging the public to be very cautious when using fish cleaning stations and if watering lawns with lake water. Also, pets and livestock should not drink the water or swim in the affected areas. Also avoid areas of green scum, foam or floating masses of algae.
The GRDA Ecosystems Department will continue with its daily monitoring and sampling efforts indefinitely, as long as conditions warrant. Though no testing from Lake Hudson has confirmed BGA presence, those waters are also being monitored daily.
