GOP Getting Stronger In State

By AP

Oklahoma City, OK – Okla GOP closing registration gap on Democrats

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Democrats still outnumber Republicans in Oklahoma, but the GOP is quickly closing the gap.

Figures released Friday by the State Election Board show the number of registered Republicans increased by more than 36,000 since January 2010. During the same time, the number of registered Democrats increased by 88. The number of registered independents also increased by more than 15,000 in the past year.

The board reports that as of Jan. 15, there were nearly 1 million registered Democrats, 849,000 Republicans and 240,000 independents. That equals about 48 percent Democrats, 41 percent Republicans and 11 percent independents.

Ten years ago, Democrats outnumbered Republicans 55 percent to 36 percent, with just 9 percent independents.
