Tulsa, OK – City of Tulsa personnel are monitoring weather forecasts and preparing for response to a winter storm predicted for Thursday morning through Thursday night. Public Works Street Maintenance crews are on call and ready to begin treating streets for ice and snow accumulation.
The City of Tulsa is responsible for clearing snow and ice from certain segments of the Tulsa expressway system and all arterial (main) streets. Other expressway segments in Tulsa are the responsibility of the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
Street Maintenance personnel will work to make expressways and arterial streets safe and passable as soon as possible after ice or snow begins to fall. The following resources are available to attain this goal:
58 truck-mounted spreaders - assigned to 35 specific routes totaling 1,742 lane miles.
34 truck-mounted snow plows.
3 motor graders for use as plows.
1 truck-mounted liquid de-icer spraying unit.
Approximately 6,000 tons of salt (More salt is arriving from an order placed after the December 2009 storm.)
116 employees.
The City of Tulsa has equipped both its West Maintenance Yard and East Maintenance Yard with power generators. These generators will keep fuel flowing to vehicles and enable the equipment maintenance shop to service these vehicles. City fuel stations have been supplied with 110,000 gallons of fuel - half diesel and half unleaded.
The Tulsa Fire Department will have 142 personnel on duty at all times during this storm event. Police uniform divisions also have generators to ensure a steady fuel supply. Tulsa's water treatment plants are prepared to ensure continuous water service during the storm. Two generators also have been provided for use at the Tulsa Zoo.
