Here's hoping you can join us for the next edition of All This Jazz, beginning at 10pm on Saturday the 1st, right here on Public Radio 89.5-1. (Note that you can learn more about our show and always get the latest playlist information at this link.) We'll also offer, as ever, a 7pm re-broadcast of ATJ on Sunday the 2nd on Jazz 89.5-2, which is Public Radio Tulsa's all-jazz HD Radio channel.
Each week, our two-hour program delivers modern jazz, both recent and classic, right up till midnight. And the second half of our show always carries a "theme."
Next time around, that theme is The Music of Harold Arlen. This incredibly prolific and versatile Great American Songbook composer --- who was born in February of 1905, died in 1986, and gave us such timeless popular tunes as "Over the Rainbow," "Stormy Weather," and "It's Only a Paper Moon" --- collaborated with such top-notch lyricists as Ted Koehler, Johnny Mercer, "Yip" Harburg, and Ira Gershwin. Highly melodic, superbly constructed, and steeped in the blues, Arlen's themes --- which, in total, number more than 400 --- have long been favored by jazz players of all sorts and styles.
Thus we'll hear (in the 11pm hour of our broadcast) the likes of June Christy and Thelonious Monk and the Modern Jazz Quartet doing such Arlen gems as "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "As Long as I Live" and "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea."
Please do tune in!
