Lawton, OK – Decades-old Fort Sill houses set for demolition

FORT SILL, Okla. (AP) Demolition of decades-old Fort Sill houses has begun in preparation for work to start on a new 432-home development at the U.S. Army base.

The 11 structures coming down in Fort Sill's Artillery Village include eight duplexes and three garages built during the 1950s. The Lawton Constitution reports that the area where the houses now are located will be turned into a grassy area.

Picerne Military Housing has contracted with Gill's Demolition of Lawton to tear down the houses. Picerne spokeswoman Amber McNeil says the demolition work is the start of Picerne's project that will including building 432 new homes, renovating 888 others and constructing three neighborhood centers.

Groundbreaking for what will be called Buffalo Soldier Acres is set for Nov. 18.
