Tulsa, OK – Tulsa police reject plan, mayor says layoffs next
TULSA, Okla. (AP) The Fraternal Order of Police in Tulsa have overwhelmingly rejected a proposal that Mayor Dewey Bartlett says would have prevented layoffs.
Officer David Turner said Wednesday that 90 percent of those voting on the proposal rejected it. City officials say that means 155 officers will be laid off Friday.
Turner says the main reason for the vote is a lack of confidence and trust in the mayor's administration. Bartlett said in a statement that the union put its own interest ahead of those they serve.
The proposal included 5.2 percent salary cuts, eight unpaid furlough days next fiscal year and no step pay increases.
Bartlett says the only thing that will prevent layoffs is if the union reconsiders and accepts the plan.
