Flu Season is Here

By Associated Press

Oklahoma City, OK –

TULSA, Okla. (AP) Health officials say it's too early to predict just how nasty Oklahoma's flu season will become this season.

The flu is blamed for one death since Sept. 1 and sent at least 30 people to the hospital. The flu was blamed for 47 deaths in Oklahoma last year and 1,300 hospitalizations.

State epidemiologist Dr. Kristy Bradley with the Oklahoma State Department of Health says the holidays traditionally prompt a spike in flu-related cases, but said the greatest flu activity comes between mid-January and mid-February.

Bradley says there is some influenza circulating in Oklahoma, but it's at relatively low levels now.

Health officials are urging people to get a flu shot to prevent the spread of the illness.
