Flu Hitting Oklahoma

By AP

Oklahoma City, OK – Okla. officials report another flu death

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Oklahoma health officials say the number of deaths related to complications from influenza has risen.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health says one death was reported in the past week, and 62 people were hospitalized. Health Department officials say the person who died was in the 65 years and older age group and lived in McClain County.

Three people have died from flu complications since Sept. 1.

Communicable Disease Division director Laurence Burnsed says there have been 212 influenza-associated hospitalizations since the beginning of September.

Burnsed says 90 percent of specimens tested at the Health Department's laboratories were Type A influenza.

He says health officials are encouraging residents to get the flu vaccine, to follow routine hygienic practices and to stay at home when they're sick.
